For what is supposed to be a treat this is a pretty amazing breakdown. The fats and carb content is low enough to be fit in most cutting diets. 15g of protein is fairly low but this is more of an addition to your diet rather than something you’d plan into it.

Taste
It only comes in Vanilla but that’s fine because it’s delicious – it’s surprisingly good a bit like angle delight in its consistency and taste. It’s not very big pudding but just enough o satisfy a craving.

Results
I say it quite a lot but I love supplements that help you keep on a diet. These pudding pots taste great and have a much better nutritional profile than the taste would have you believe. They are pretty cheap, convenient to keep in the fridge for when a craving strikes and have I mentioned that they taste great? A few more flavour choices would be nice but the Vanilla tastes good enough to forgive that. I expected the carbs/sugars to be triple what they are which was a very pleasant surprise – it means that I could have these even on a low carb day which saved my diet more than a few times.

Treats like this fall under the non-essentials bracket, yes they are great but if you on a budget you’ll want to focus on the more important supplements. They do serve a purpose though they allow you to break the diet without doing any real damage to it. If you suffer from constant cravings for a dessert or struggle to keep to a diet then why not give these a shot, they just save you from yourself. 9/10

XBrain Micellar Casein

 XBrain® Micellar Casein Chocolate

Overview
Here is what XBrain have to say:

XBrain’s Organic Micellar Casein is a superior protein supplement produced with the utmost care from organic milk using only the gentlest heating and filtration processes. It is free from artificial sweeteners and preservatives, using the healthy, all-natural stevia for its excellent taste. Because of the unique, slow-release properties of casein, it will ensure that your body is in a constant anabolic state throughout the day, making sure that you don’t waste the muscle gain from your workout. It should definitely be added to the muscle gain strategy of anybody who cares about deriving the maximum benefits from their training.

Nutritional Information
 XBrain® Micellar Casein Chocolate
Obviously the protein source here is casein but at 18.75g the dose is a little on the light side for me. The carb and fat content looks perfect. XBrain have wisely opted for Stevia over artificial sweeteners.

XBrain clearly believing that less is more and choosing to not add in any extras and let the quality of their product speak for itself.

Taste
I had the Chocolate flavour (Natural and Vanilla also available) and I found the actual flavour very pleasant, not too sweet or sickly, but it was a little bit “thin” for my liking and even when I reduced the water content it still seemed to be thin. It’s a minor issue but I thought I’d mention it. It didn’t have any nasty aftertaste or problems mixing up.

Results
XBrain are looking to become the go to brand for all natural, organic and “clean” supplements. They certainly have put a great amount of effort into their Micellar Casein, from beginning to end this has clearly been built to be the best Casein on the market, from the quality of the milk used to using Stevia XBrain really has taken care to make this as “clean” as possible.

The nutritional profile is very good, using Stevia always wins points in my book, I do think the protein content is a little light but that’s not the end of the world. The carb and fat content are kept very low which means this can be easily slotted into any cycle and could have benefits for cutting or bulking.

The taste is pretty good, organic products tend to taste a bit worse than their unhealthier counterparts but it wasn’t too noticeable with this product. The main issue with Micellar Casein is the price point – coming in at £1.18 per serving is simply too expensive. I have virtually no issues with the product itself, in fact I think its very good, but I’m just not sure that I’d be willing to pay for it. If you place a particularly high value on a product being all organic then you might be willing to pay for it but it would be a deal breaker for me. 7.5/10

MyProtein My Bar Zero

 My Bar Zero - 12 x 65g

Overview
Here’s what MyProtein have to say:

My Bar Zeros are a deliciously tasting, high protein bar perfect for anybody wanting an alternative source of protein when on the go.
These indulgent bars are available in 5 fantastic flavours which include; Lemon Cheesecake, Chocolate, Almond Vanilla, Strawberry Vanilla and Apple Cinnamon.

Each bar provides 20g of protein per serving which will contribute to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass. My Bar Zeros are low in saturated fat and provide 90% less carbohydrates than a standard protein bar, making them the ideal snack to increase your protein intake. The high protein content in these bars is sourced from milk protein which contributes to the exceptional amino acid profile. Unlike many other protein bars, there are no polyols added to My Bar Zeros.

The My Bar Zeros are perfect as a convenient snack throughout the day or to consume around your training sessions to increase your protein consumption. They are a great snack for anyone with a sweet tooth and looking for a great-tasting, high protein bar.

On paper it looks like a great breakdown for a protein bar on a cutting diet, the carbs and fats are low and the protein is pretty good. The protein itself comes from milk so this would not be ideal for the lactose intolerant among you.

Taste
I had the chocolate flavour and it wasn’t the best tasting protein bar out there. It was usually melted onto the wrapper and a pain to actually eat. Whilst it is technically a bar it has the consistency of nougat and is soft and flexible. I wasn’t overly keen on this bar but some of the other available flavours look promising.

Protein bars are supposed to fill the gaps in your meal plan or be a quick fix if something goes wrong. They are also usually absolutely delicious, not too great on the nutritional breakdown and carb heavy. MyProtein takes a crack a “diet” protein bar.

My Bar Zero actually has a pretty great nutritional breakdown providing a decent 19.6g of protein and low carbs and fats to keep you on track with your beach body aspirations. So you wouldn’t need to worry about ruining your carb cycle or any other diet I can think of. This bar could be slipped into most cutting diets.

Coming in at about £1.67 per bar they aren’t quite as cheap as MyProtein reputation might have you believe but they are still cheaper than the majority on the market. No side effects were experienced whilst eating My Bar Zero.

The only real thing letting down My Bar Zero is the taste but I don’t see how an Apple Cinnamon bar could be anything but delicious so maybe try that one instead of the chocolate. All things considered My Bar Zero is a solid choice to fill any gaps in your cutting diet. 7/10

MyProtein Breakfast Smoothie

 Breakfast Smoothie

Overview
The Breakfast Smoothie is a great tasting, high protein smoothie ideal particularly for anyone who struggles to consume a healthy breakfast in the morning. The Breakfast Smoothie provides all the essential nutrients that a breakfast should deliver, providing a range of vitamins and minerals, high quality source of protein (Whey Concentrate and Isolate), a unique Greens blend, and a Grains blend. Each serving provides natural banana and strawberry flavourings as well as having natural fruit pieces to offer a natural tasting smoothie. In addition to the excellent nutritional profile, each 50g serving also provides 75 mg of caffeine through a combination of Green Tea and Guarana Extract.

Not a bad looking breakdown for a “breakfast” shake. The protein comes from Whey concentrate and the carbs (mostly) come from a blend of grains. The real star of this breakfast shake is the Greens Blend that’s mixed in which includes Spirulina, Beetroot, Tomato, Broccoli, Spinach, Green Tea and lots more.

A good Greens product is a great way to start your day and I do like to see things like this included in Breakfast products.

Taste
I Had the Banana and Strawberry flavour and it doesn’t taste much like Banana or Strawberry. It mixes up into a strange green colour and has a strange flavour. I wouldn’t say its unpleasant but it certainly isn’t Banana and Strawberry.

Side Effects
None

Price
£13.99 for a 500g bag with 10 servings in.

Results
I’m not usually overly keen on breakfast products normally they are sugar heavy and protein light but actually MyProtein have done a great job with the nutritional breakdown. The 19g of protein could be higher but since most of you will be using standard protein powders in your daily diet anyway that won’t pose much of an issue. The carbs are kept in check with only 15g and the fats are very low with 2.2g. So this might not make into your low carb day but on a general diet would be absolutely fine.

The Greens Blend they use here looks very good on paper but unfortunately I haven’t got the actual amount of each ingredient so its hard to draw an accurate conclusion – its certainly a step in the right direction though.

The main issue is the taste the banana and strawberry just isn’t good enough to make me want to take this supplement. If they could find a way to make the flavour strong enough to cover the greens blend without compromising the nutritional values of the shake I think they would be onto a winner. This is a little bit more expensive than some of MyProtein's offerings but its still on par with the rest of the market.

Although Breakfast Smoothie does have some major plus points over other breakfast supplements it just doesn’t have the taste and price point to really make an impact. MyProtein are constantly overhauling their products and I think as soon as this gets a taste upgrade then it’ll be great. 6/10

CNP ProRecover

Overview
Here’s what CNP have to say:

CNP Pro Recover is a powerful post-workout recovery formula. Post workout supplements are often misunderstood and therefore neglected but we can’t stress enough that the period following training is essential to recovery and the prevention of muscle breakdown. If you don’t take action during this critical window of opportunity (typically 30 minutes post-exercise) then you’ll miss a key time to improve and reach your goals.
Pro Recover has been specially formulated with specific amounts of high glycemic carbohydrates and easily absorbed di and tri peptide amino acids for rapid absorption to enhance recuperation and recovery. High concentrations of Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) replace the amino acids used during exercise and delay fatigue between regular bouts of exertion which make it ideal to be taken after any form of sport or exercise.

Don't be scared by the high sugar content it is to replenish your muscles which is why the top listed ingredient is Glucose. The protein content (23.6g) comes mostly from Whey Concentrate but there is some Isolate included as well. The protein content could be a little higher but at 23.6g its still a respectable amount. The ratio of carbs to protein is more or less the standard 2:1 for recovery products.

Taste
We had both the Strawberry and Chocolate to try. Overall the Chocolate was the preferred flavour with us finding the Strawberry a little bit too sweet. Both mixed up very well and were easy to drink.

CNP ProRecover was designed with the sole purpose of recovery. Everything else takes a backseat, whilst this might help with growth that isn’t the aim of ProRecover. When using ProRecover post workout you should have little to no muscle soreness the following day. ProRecover more or less eliminates DOMs. Simple as that. You feel fresh the next day, no more limping around or struggling to put a T-Shirt on because you can’t lift your arms above your head.

ProRecover tastes pretty good, chocolate was favoured over strawberry but that’s all done to personal preference. Whilst £25.99 for 16 servings is a little bit pricey its better to think of it as 16 workouts so 1 tub might last you a month. You could even save it for the tougher days in the gym…legs I’m looking at you! You can buy it in single serving bottles if you want to try before you buy.

The fact is the faster you can recover from a workout the sooner you can put 100% into the next workout. Recovery is one of the most important factors with your success in the gym and CNP have made it much easier for you. ProRecover is one of the best recover products on the market. 9.5/10

MyProtein Creatine Chewable

 Creatine Monohydrate (Creapure®) Chewable Tablets

Overview
Here’s what MyProtein have to say:

Creatine monohydrate (Creapure) Chewable Tablets are extremely great tasting and are convenient to consume when on the go with each tablet providing 1g of creatine monohydrate (Creapure).
Creatine monohydrate (Creapure) is made by AlzChem in Germany and is world-renowned to be the purest and best quality micronized Creatine Monohydrate available. Creapure is the only Creatine to be consistently tested to be free from impurities and unnecessary by-products including Creatinine (CRN), dicyandiamide (DCD), Dihydrotriazine (DHT) and Thiourea. Creapure is 99.99% pure Creatine Monohydrate.

Taste
I trialled the Berry flavour and I found these little are sweets really nice, not as powdery as they look. I can’t think of a comparable sweet but I actually liked it. They are similar in size, shape and texture to an Xtra Strong Mint. I never noticed an unpleasant aftertaste.

Price

Results
I like MyProtein’s creativity with this product I never seen a Creatine sweet before. The Creatine used is Monohydrate the most common form of Creatine. Each sweet provides 1g of Creatine (they suggest 3 taken post workout), the Creatine sweets are great tasting and pretty cheap as well. I think 3g of Creatine is a little bit lightly dosed so would recommend another creatine source along side this – either a powder/tablet or an all-in-one shake protein shake.

The main issue with powdered Creatine that people report is that it makes their shakes gritty so this would be one solution if you really can’t stand adding a powder into your shakes. That’s one of the only reasons I can think of why you’d need this product other than wanting a change. I suppose if you are on the road a lot and don’t want to consume excess liquid or just for convenience whilst travelling they could be useful. I don’t think anyone will replace their current Creatine shake/powder with this as their sole Creatine source but I think it’s a useful addition to a stack, a post workout Creatine boost is always a good thing, just make sure you have another form of Creatine to get your daily dose. 7/10

Taste
I tried both the Chocolate and Vanilla. I found the Vanilla quite bland but the chocolate was excellent, really nice. With the Vanilla I ended up adding something to it to give it a bit more flavour but with the Chocolate it was perfect by itself.

They both mixed up perfectly and set in the fridge within about 10 minutes, it has the consistency of Angel Delight.

Dieting is hard! Anyone that tells you different is a liar and you should immediately slap them. Twice. That’s why I love anything that allows me to “cheat clean”, anything that can trick my body into thinking its indulged its sweet-tooth but actually helps me reach my goals is precious to me. You get some high protein cheat foods that are better than their unhealthy counterparts but few that you could really eat completely guilt free.

I used CNP Dessert on my low carb days because it allowed me to have something sweet whilst still staying on track. The Vanilla flavour could do with some work but the Chocolate is awesome. With the blend of fast and slow proteins it actually makes a very good evening snack almost doubling as a bedtime shake.

It’s not unreasonably expensive but I would like to see it a little cheaper. The reality of these kinds of products are that as nice as they are or as good a nutritional profile they might have they will always be a luxury item. You won’t use them daily but I think that it would be good to keep in the cupboard for an emergency treat when you can’t stand the diet anymore. 8/10

Bio Synergy BCAA Powder

Overview
Here’s what Bio-Synergy have to say:

Bio-Synergy BCAA Pre-work out is an advanced high performance & delicious blend of amino acids containing 5g of the Branched Chain Amino Acids (L Leucine, L Isoleucine and L Valine) and Beta Alanine, Taurine, Caffeine and Vitamin B6, making it one of the most advanced strength, endurance and energy supplements on the market.

Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs) contain a 2:1:1 ratio of Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine. These amino acids are considered to be essential amino acids as they cannot be synthesised in the body. BCAAs can be consumed throughout the day for or before, during and after workouts. You can increase the effectiveness of BCAAs by consuming with Vitamin B6, which is whey each serving contains 100% RDA.

Bio-Synergy PRE workout BCAA is suitable for anyone taking part in intense training or exercise, or for anyone looking to increase lean mass and reducing body fat levels.
Each delicious blue raspberry 12g serving is sugar, fat and calorie free, so provides the performance & recovery without un-necessary calories.

Nutritional Information

Bio Synergy use the 2:1:1 ratio that has proven most effective/popular over the years. Taurine is included for focus and Beta Alanine for tinglyness (that’s a real word!). The popular preworkout ingredient caffeine has been thrown in to give you a bit of a buzz.

Taste
Although the Blue Raspberry flavour is bright blue and makes you look like a 12 year old when you drink it the taste is actually pretty good. I usually added more water than suggested to weaken it a bit but I quite liked it. It mixed up well in standard shaker.

Side Effects
None

Price
£34.99 for a tub with 30 servings in.

Results
Although this is billed as a preworkout it’s actually a much more effective intra-workout, the small amount of caffeine is enough to prolong the effects of a preworkout and just keep you going that little bit longer.

As a preworkout I found it a little bit weak, the focus was alright but it did nothing for pumps. It would work for cardio or sports but not in the weight room. As an intra workout I thought it was great. The extra caffeine boost really helped during longer sessions and the added focus made PR attempts a little less daunting.

The flavour is pretty great and whilst the price is a little bit higher than I’d like to see its not that far off the mark. Its not a groundbreaking product but it is a solid one and it most certainly works better as an intraworkout than a preworkout. 7/10

CNP GFX+

Overview
Here’s what CNP have to say:

CNP Pro GFX+ is a scientifically developed pre-workout formula with caffeine, amino acids and creatine which is proven to enhance physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high intensity exercise such as weight lifting. This beneficial effect is obtained with a daily intake of 3g of creatine. GFX+ is formulated to deliver scientifically proven levels of all its active ingredients and provides 1.5g of Beta Alanine, 200mg Caffeine, 2g Arginine Nitrate, 2.8g Citrulline Malate, 5g Branched Chain Amino Acids, 5g Creatine Monohydrate, 150mg Pine Bark Extract and 0.8g Taurine in each 20g serving. The mineral magnesium is also added, which contributes to a reduction in tiredness and fatigue. GFX+ is the ideal pre-workout supplement to enhance your training performance.

CNP Pro GFX+ is designed for healthy adults of 18+ years of age seeking to support performance and muscle development during resistance exercise. Some people using Pro GFX+ may experience a tingling feeling from the beta alanine; this is harmless but depending on individual tolerance can be unsettling. Don’t worry; it’s supposed to feel like that.

5g of BCAAs, 5g of Creatine, 800mg of Taurine, 1500mg of Beta Alanine – it’s all quite standard for a preworkout until you get to Pine Bark Extract which is what sets this preworkout apart from others. Pine Bark Extract increase blood flow, acts as a pain killer and even has antioxidant properties.

Taste
We used both the Summer Fruits and Tropical flavours and whilst both were very good by preworkout standards the Summer Fruits was the better tasting. They mixed up easily and didn’t leave grit at the bottom of the shaker.

Side Effects
Slight tingle from the Beta Alanine but that’s not unusual and wears off quickly.

Price
£22.99 for a tub with 16 servings in.

Results
CNP might be the go to company for endurance supplements but this was clearly made for the weight room. When I read through the ingredients list I wasn’t expecting this to be too powerful, I expected moderate energy than ran out 30 minutes into the session, decent pumps and a bit of focus. I was blown away by what GFX+ brought to the table.

The energy and endurance was intense, it didn’t last for that long maybe 45 minutes but the majority of the time I was able to storm through my workouts in that time before I even felt like I’d finished the first set. The pumps were much better than expected (possibly the Pine Bark going to work) and lasted a good few hours after the session had finished. Whilst you do get a “switched on” feeling it was never overpowering.

I’ve used Pre’s before where you get end up with a headache and a huge energy crash but with GFX+ there are no side effects at all that any of the team experienced. Coming in at £1.43 a serving it’s a little bit more expensive than I’d like but I guess you are paying for quality. It’s certainly not so expensive that it’s put me off the product.

CNP have crafted an excellent preworkout that should be effective enough for people of all levels, the only downside we could think of is the price and that the tub only has 16 servings in so you’ll end up re-ordering quite soon. 8.5/10

ActiVeman Thermolean

Overview
Here’s what ActiVeman have to say:

Need to get to a competitive weight or just need some help burning fat then Thermoelan’s unique formula is the perfect daily supplement for you.

Whether it is getting to a competitive weight or just getting in shape, we all sometimes need some help and this unique patent pending blending of ingredients including Copper, Green Coffee, Green Tea and Choline has been specifically developed to metabolise energy more efficiently and provide a metabolic boost.

Nutritional Information

Thermolean is doing what all good fat burners should do and attacking fat from more than one angle. They have added in Chromium in a good dose to act as an appetite suppressant but as the name Thermolean suggests they also are trying to create a thermogenic environment so your body raises its metabolic rate. Green Coffee, Green Tea, Caffeine lead the way in the actual “fat burning”.

One of my favourite fat burners Cinnamon has been included in Thermolean. Cinnamon has been linked with removing belly fat which is notorious for being among the most stubborn to get rid of. I would like to see a little more Cinnamon included but its easy enough to add into your diet because Cinnamon is delicious and can be added to pretty much anything!

Taste
None but sometimes I did get a little aftertaste – drink enough water and you’ll be fine.

Side Effects
Slight aftertaste.

Price
£29.99 for 45 days supply.

Results
Fat Burners usually take a bit longer to show “proper” results than our reviews allow for but with Thermolean the results kicked in during the middle of week 3. The first thing you’ll notice is you lose a considerable amount of water weight during the first 2 weeks which can make a fairly drastic difference to your body shape. You’ll start to notice that your cravings and appetite are beginning to shrink so you’ll likely eat less. Some fat burners can have some unwanted side effects (sweating, hot flushes, itchiness, even nausea) but Thermolean didn't give me anything beyond a little bit of heartburn if I didn’t drink enough.

With any fat burner you’ll need to put in work at the gym and in the kitchen to benefit fully from them but Thermolean will accelerate your results. The caffeine content isn’t particularly high with this one so you shouldn’t need to back off your morning coffee or your preworkout whilst using Thermolean.

ActiVeman have priced this very reasonably – fat burners are traditionally quite expensive but Thermolean is only 66p per day (roughly) and is well below the average cost. All things considered Thermolean is a very impressive product and easily places itself within our top ranked Fat Burners. 9.5/10
