Bio Synergy Whey Better RTD

Overview
Here’s what Bio Synergy have to say:

Bio-Synergy Whey Better RTD (Ready to Drink) is the ultimate protein on the go. Each delicious 310ml bottle packs a real protein punch of 25g and unlike many other similar products is low in fat and and sugar; in fact, it is only 130k/cal per bottle.

Bio-Synergy Whey Better RTD is a perfect on-the-go protein solution, as it can fit easily into a bag or even a pocket and although tasting great chilled does not require refrigeration.

So whether you need a high protein boost after exercise or are looking for a nutritious shake packed with protein and essential vitamins it will fit in to your lifestyle and can be used alongside our Whey Better powder and other award winning products to help you #makeithappen and get more out of life.

Nutritional Information

26.1g of Protein, 0.3g of Fat and only 2.3g of Carbs means this is a very strong shake and not just by RTD standards but even some powders would struggle to beat these stats.

Taste
I have only tried the Strawberry flavour but it was awesome, it taste very good and not at all artificial or chemically like some RTDs on the market . The shake is a little bit thinner than I personally like but it doesn’t detract from the great taste.

Side Effects
None

Price
£41.88 for 12 bottles which works out to £3.49 per bottle.

Results
Whey Better RTD is a great product in its own right, it’s not quite as good as the Whey Better powder but RTDs can rarely match their powdered counterparts. Whey Better RTD is purely a convenience product and will likely only be used when you are either short of time or need to travel without a tub of protein.

Whey Better RTD has virtually everything going for it and only one drawback. The nutritional breakdown is excellent, the taste is spot on and its so easy to throw into your car and take when you are on the go. The only drawback to this product is the price. It works out to be very expensive at £3.49 a serving. Now you obviously wouldn’t use a RTD as a day to day protein so that 12 pack might last you 3 months but its still more pricey than I’d like to see. The product is excellent but whether it’s worth the money is up to you. If the price was more reasonable then this would easily score an 8.5-9/10 but unfortunately the price tag does drag down the final score a bit 7/10.

ActiVeman Energy Charge

Overview

Here’s what ActiVeman have to say:

Power Up with the ultimate low calorie, low sugar, refreshing high performance PRE – workout energy drink to take your training to the “next level”
Available in 2 flavours orange and blue raspberry each serving contains Agave nature’s lowest GI sugar to provide sustained energy and Fructose for fast energy, it also benefits from a host of micro nutrients in a patent pending blend which are research backed including AAKG, B-Vitamins, Zinc and Green Coffee for energy metabolism.
Magnesium to reduce fatigue, improve energy levels, improve muscle function and protein absorption/synthesis.
Iron has numerous benefits including improving energy, flow of oxygen, reduction in fatigue and even brain function.
AAKG to increase nitric oxide levels to improve muscle protein synthesis allowing you to train harder and gain strength.
D-Aspartic Acid is a natural ingredient which is particularly good for men over 30 as it assists in boosting testosterone levels which helps with energy levels.
Citrulline Malate found in water melon among other foods has been show to help improve performance in endurance athletes.
Beta Alanine is an amino acid which assists both aerobic and anaerobic performance making it ideal for both endurance and strength training and also assists in performance.

Nutritional Information

What a lot you can pack into a 10g serving! The most important ingredients here I think are Green Coffee (energy and raised metabolism), DAA (elevate Testosterone production) & AAKG (improves NO product and greatly helps strength output). This is a well thought-out and effectively dosed product. There are other bits and pieces included in here as well most of which help delay fatigue or help with energy.

Taste
I had the Raspberry flavour and it was alright, not unpleasant by any means but not amazing. It’s a preworkout so taste isn’t really that important, what’s more important is that there was no bloating or aftertaste distracting me from my workout.

Side Effects
None

Price
£34.99 for a tub with 40 servings in.

Results
Energy Charge has a lot of plus points and very few negatives. Let’s focus on the good points first. It’s a very strong build for a preworkout with some excellent ingredients and precise doses. There are no side effects – even the expected ones like tingling from the Beta-Alanine wasn’t as noticeable as I had predicted. Some preworkouts taste horrible but Energy Charge isn’t too bad, it’ll take a few servings to adjust the water levels to your personal taste. The price works out to £0.87 per serving which is a little bit more expensive than the average preworkout but not by much so its reasonable value. The only downside is that I found it a little bit weak for the gym however it worked excellently for cardio and sports.

I think this preworkout was designed more with sports and endurance events in mind rather than intense weight sessions. The pumps are a bit weak (again sports over gym) and the focus isn’t as strong as in other products however the energy and endurance side of things is great. So really this preworkout is aimed more at sports and cardio sessions rather than the weight room. If energy and endurance is what you are after then Energy Charge is awesome but if moving heavy weight is your primary aim then you might want something a little stronger. 8.5/10

Chilli Con Carne

Displaying IMG_2018.JPG

Healthy Chilli Con Carne

For this meal I use Lean Steak Mince 500g from The Fitness Food Company.
Mince is a perfect budget friendly source of protein, and a great variant from chicken. Our extra lean mince is perfect for a low fat Bolognese or curry or can be made into a fiery chilli.
Nutritional Information per raw 100g
Energy (Kj) - 586.0
Energy (Kcal) - 135.0
Protein - 20.2g
Carbohydrate - 0.90g
of which sugars - 0.9g
Fat - 10.0g
of which saturates - 2.4g
Sodium - 0.07g
You will need:
1 tbsp oil (coconut oil if you are being really good)
1 large onion
1 red pepper
2 garlic cloves, peeled
1 heaped tsp hot chilli powder – or mild if you don’t want it too hot
1 tsp paprika
1 tsp ground cumin
500g lean steak mince from The Fitness Food Company
1 beef stock cube
400g can chopped tomatoes
410g can red kidney beans
Fresh Spinach

To make our Healthy Chilli Con Carne follow these simple steps:

1.                              Prepare your vegetables. Chop 1 large onion into small strips then cut them in half. Cut 1 red pepper in half lengthways, remove stalk and wash the seeds away, then chop to the size you want. Peel and finely chop 2 garlic cloves.
2.                              Start cooking. Put your wok on the hob over a medium heat. Add the oil and leave it until fairly hot. Add the onions and cook, stirring fairly frequently until the onions are soft. Tip in the garlic, red pepper, chilli powder, paprika & ground cumin. Give it a good stir, then leave it to cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
3.                              Brown the 500g lean steak mince. Turn the heat up a bit, add the meat to the pan and break it up with your wooden spoon. Make sure there is no pink left.
4.                              Making the sauce. Crumble 1 beef stock cube into 300ml hot water in a jug. Pour this into the pan with the mince mixture. Open 1 can of chopped tomatoes (400g can) and add these as well. Then drain and rinse 1 can of red kidney beans (410g can) and stir them into the chilli pot.
5.                              Bring the whole thing to the boil, give it a good stir and put a lid on the pan. Turn down the heat until it is gently bubbling and leave it for 20 minutes. You should check on the pan occasionally to stir it and make sure the sauce doesn’t catch on the bottom of the pan or isn’t drying out. If it is, add a couple of tablespoons of water and make sure that the heat really is low enough. After simmering gently, the saucy mince mixture should look thick, moist and juicy.
6.                              Now throw in as much fresh spinach as you want – in about 2 minutes it should have wilted and you can stir it through the Chilli.
7.                              It should be ready now but here’s a little tip for a really intense flavour replace the lid, turn off the heat and leave your chilli to stand for 10 minutes before serving. Leaving your chilli to stand is really important as it allows the sauce to thicken and the flavours to infuse.
I find this Chilli normally makes 4 servings but you might be hungrier than me.

I like to serve this with plain brown rice, another option would be a baked sweet potato. I don’t think this constitutes “healthy” but if you have the macros then a slice of Garlic Bread with this is absolute heaven. Remember to take you side dishes into account when you calculate your Macros.

Chilli and Basil Burger

Fitness Food Company Chilli and Basil Burgers

Our chilli and basil burgers provide an excellent cheat meal to include into your diet. A burger built for those who think they can handle a bit of heat whilst providing 17g of protein per burger.
We send all of our burgers frozen! Quality is never sacrificed!

Nutritional Information per burger
Energy (Kcal) - 291.0
Protein - 17.1g
Carbohydrate - 0.1g
of which sugars - 0.1g
Fat - 24.7g
of which saturates - 10.7g

We recommend preparing them like this:

1)                  Preheat your Grill to medium-high
2)                  Line your grill pan with foil and place the rack on top
3)                  Grill for 4 minutes on each side
4)                  Cook another 2 minutes for medium-rare, 4 minutes for medium and 5-6 for well done
5)                  Make sure to keep an eye on them and in case your grill is fiercer than mine! Cut one open to check it’s thoroughly cooked.

If you are being carb conscious then you could serve it without a bun but personally I think its best served with a brown bun, lightly toasted, with salsa & guacamole, side salad and our spiced sweet potato wedges go perfectly with this meal. For more side dish suggestions see our “Side Dishes” section. Remember to account for your sides and extras in your Macros.

CNP High Protein Smoothie

Overview
Here’s what CNP Professional have to say:

Team Sky and CNP have combined their expertise in race nutrition to develop a delicious, nutritious range. Packed with 26g of protein and fruit juice. Team Sky fruit smoothies are the ideal way to fuel your day especially when you're on the go.

These smoothies come in 3 flavours and all differ slightly in nutritional breakdown, mostly the carb/sugar content depending on what fruit juices are used.

Although the protein content matches a standard protein shake make no mistake this is a smoothie and it does have fruit juices in not just flavourings. That’s one of the main reasons the sugar content is quite high in some flavours. 26.4g of protein is excellent for a smoothie – the protein mainly comes from Whey Concentrate.

Taste
We tested a case of all 3 flavours:
Raspberry and Blueberry – my personal favourite, really refreshing and not too sweet.
Pineapple and Coconut – absolutely delicious, perfect straight out of the fridge on a hot day.
Orange and Mango – Tastes exactly as you would expect, a little bit "thinner" than the other two.

CNP have really nailed the flavours of these smoothies, all 3 of them are amazing. Easily some of the best tasting RTD shakes I’ve ever had.

Side Effects
None

Price
£20 for a case of 8 so they work out to £2.50 each.

Results
These aren’t a traditional protein shake, this isn’t a post-workout this is a treat. When you are on a strict diet I can’t think of many better ways to cheat clean than with a Pineapple and Coconut Smoothie straight from the fridge. These would make a great addition to a healthy breakfast as well, 26g of protein is a respectable amount in any meal and if you combine this with CNP High Protein Porridge Pot then you have an amazing healthy breakfast.

The Sugar content of the Orange and Mango & Pineapple and Coconut flavours might scare of the beach body chasing people out there but the Raspberry and Blueberry only has 3.6g of Sugar which is much more manageable.

These smoothies are a little more expensive than I was hoping but if you use it as a treat not a daily shake then it’s much more acceptable. I certainly plan to always have a case of either the Raspberry and Blueberry or the Pineapple and Coconut in the cupboard to bring out when I need to break the diet and keep my cravings under control. 9/10

CNP Protein Porridge

Overview
Here’s what CNP have to say:

Team Sky and CNP have combined their expertise in race nutrition to develop a delicious, nutritious range of protein porridges. Each serving provides 12g of Protein as consumed. Team Sky Porridge are the ideal way to fuel your day.
The fibre in oats includes beta-glucans which contribute to the natural maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels as part of the diet low in saturated fat and a healthy lifestyle.

There are 3 flavours (original, apricot, super fruits) all have slightly different breakdowns so if your macros are tight then make sure you double check before you buy.

12.5g of protein is fairly low but as an “on-the-go” breakfast it’s actually quite good. The protein is from milk  powder and whey isolate. Most of you will have noticed the sugar content and it is quit high so this probably won’t be on your list of approved foods when cutting but for bulking or maintenance cycles it would be more acceptable.

The fat is kept low by using skimmed milk powder.

Taste
We had a case of the Original and Super Fruits to review and both tasted very nice but it’ll take you a few tubs to work out the right consistency. The recommended level of water made it too thick for my liking I ended up adding quite a bit more than suggested to get it just right. I found the Super Fruits in particular to be excellent I thought it tasted great and the little bits of Raspberry made it even better.

Price
£15.00 for a case of 12 so £1.25 per serving.

Results
If you have time to have breakfast at home in the morning then this probably won’t be for you, CNP haven’t made porridge better they’ve just mad it more accessible for people who are pressed for time in the mornings.

The Nutritional Information isn’t as good as porridge you make yourself but is much better than you could buy in a shop. That’s really what this product is competing with shop bought ready made breakfasts and frankly CNP is better in everyway than a porridge you could buy from a coffee shop. It’s better for you, it tastes better and its cheaper. At £1.25 per serving CNP beats any option I’ve seen on the high street.

If you’re looking to look after your body on the road or with early mornings in the office then this can easily be made in a hotel room or at a desk in the mornings. I actually used it as part of my post workout/breakfast as that’s when my body could use the carb content most effectively. CNP and Team Sky have made an excellent solution to “no time for breakfast” excuse you hear so often as people tuck into their third McMuffin of the week. CNP High Protein Porridge is a great choice for a ready made breakfast on the go. 8/10

Protein Science #Gains

Overview
Here’s what Protein Science have to say:

#GAINS contains a combination of high levels of protein, quality carbohydrates, BCAAs and d-aspartic acid.
#GAINS provides a massive protein hit per serving stimulating muscle protein synthesis. Our protein blend naturally contains high levels of essential amino acids to increase muscle growth and aid recovery.
#GAINS is formulated with an optimum blend of protein and high levels of quality carbohydrates making it a great post-workout shake for rapid glycogen replenishment. The primary carbohydrate, dextrose monohydrate, stimulates the production of adenosine triphosphate, or ATP, which is the main energy source for muscle cells.
#GAINS is fortified with BCAAs which are perfect for effectively combating muscle tissue breakdown while increasing protein synthesis, which is essential for the growth of muscle tissue.
#GAINS is uniquely enhanced with d-aspartic acid, an amino acid that regulates and boosts testosterone levels. Raising testosterone levels can improve strength and power gains while also optimising energy and endurance levels.
#GAINS is the definitive size and strength formula

As this is a mass gainer then you’ll primarily be using it post workout to refuel and grow muscles without adding too much fat. This is a fairly modest mass gainer with only 563 calories which is handy for those of you who are keeping a tighter hold on your calories consumption.

The 50g of protein is made up of primarily Pea Protein Isolate but also has some Milk Protein. The fast acting carbs come from dextrose monohydrate and maltodextrin but also contains some Sucralose.

Taste
I had the Chocolate flavour and it isn’t the best I’ve ever had but is perfectly drinkable. #Gains does suffer slightly from a common problem with gainers of being very tough to mix properly. This can be fixed by using a mixer or blender but might be an issue if you are using a standard shaker.

Side Effects
Occasional bloating but nothing that will cause a problem.

Price
£29.99 for a tub with 32 servings in - £0.94 per serving.

Results
Mass gainers are all about size and adding it rapidly. #Gains takes a slightly more measured approach to muscle gain. Most gainers will throw 1000 calories around like its nothing and chances are unless you are gifted with an incredibly fast metabolism or the perfect workout/diet plan then you’ll add a good portion of fat along with your muscle. #Gains only provides 563 calories so you can better control your fat gain. You get a good dose of protein (50g) but I’m not overly keen on the primary source being Pea Protein. The fast acting Carbs are ideal for recovery and growth and if you are using it post workout then the “sugars” should be used to replenish your muscles and hopefully nothing else.

Protein Science have made a good decision in including the potent T-Booster DAA in their gainer – a lot of companies neglect this aspect. It is peculiar that they would include an often forgotten supplement but omit Creatine. Strange but easily fixed by supplementing with a separate Creatine supplement.

One of #Gains biggest plus points is the price – gainers are notoriously expensive making 94p per serving a bargain. #Gains is a good product but with a few tweaks it could be a very good product, I’m sure in Protein Science’s second wave of products they’ll make a product to be reckoned with! 6/10

Protein Science Juggernaut

Overview
Here’s what Protein Science have to say:

Juggernaut is scientifically developed to provide a high intensity boost of power, strength and concentration. The key inclusion of beta-alanine can help to enhance strength and power gains by boosting carnosine levels for greater power during workouts.

A simple and quite common build but that doesn’t mean it should be overlooked. All the ingredients are effectively dosed and proven to delay fatigue, improve pumps and help give you an energy surge.

Taste
The Lemon and Lime was alright, most preworkouts don’t great taste but some can be absolutely foul. This was alright, it tasted a bit like flat Sprite.

Side Effects
None – if you take the full 1.5 scoops it can be a bit caffeine heavy so if you aren’t used to high levels of Stimulants then be careful.

Price
£19.99 for a 250g tub.

Results
Preworkouts accomplish a lot of things and Juggernaut is aiming to smash through them all at breakneck pace. Juggernaut will give you an energy buzz that doesn’t wear off too quickly but the important part here you don’t get the nasty energy crash that it associated with some highly caffeinated products. This is not a product for the faint of heart…or those with heart problems as on full dosage you’ll be getting 750mg of caffeine which should be enough to give anyone a jolt. You get a strong pump with Juggernaut but nothing painful or skin-tearing – high rep work obviously brings out the best pump but even on the low rep stuff you’ll notice it.

It’s worth noting that you should start off with a low dose to get used to it rather than charge in with the full 1.5 scoops. Personally I found that 1 scoop was about right for me, every now and again I liked to max out for a tough workout or I wasn’t overly excited about the gym that day.

Preworkouts prime your muscles for greater muscle growth through various mechanisms so despite being a bit of a “fun” supplement it is important to pick a good supplement. Although Juggernaut is a bit basic it will certainly give you a decent pump and a good energy boost. 7.5/10

Protein Science have adopted a nice simple formula for their flagship product. 24g of protein made up from Whey Concentrate and Isolate with low fats and low carbs. It’s a simple but proven formula.

The only negative I have is that Sucralose has been used where Stevia might have been the healthier option. That’s a very minor gripe though.

Taste
I had the Vanilla and whilst it tasted fine like most Vanilla shakes it gets a little bit bland the longer you use it for. Fortunately Protein Science also make 80% Whey in Toffee, Chocolate & Banana for varieties sake. It mixes very well in a standard shaker.

Price
£34.99 for a 2.25kg tub with 75 servings in meaning each shake works out to £0.47.

Results
Whey Protein shakes are likely your most used supplement and they help with so many vital things like muscle growth, maintenance, recovery, fat loss, basically anything fitness related a good whey can help. So there are a few key areas all whey products should excel at:

Nutritional Breakdown – if it’s loaded with bad sugar it’ll defeat the purpose.
Taste – you’re going to be drinking a lot of these so it helps if it tastes good.
Price – supplements are expensive so value is key.

Protein Science 80% Whey does have a very good nutritional breakdown, providing a solid 24g of protein with only 0.7g of sugars, low fat and carb too. The Vanilla flavour was a little bland but certainly not unpleasant and I never had any issues drinking it. Coming in at 47p a serving Protein Science’s offering won’t break the bank. Clearly Protein Science 80% Whey ticks all these boxes.

80% Whey is a basic supplement but a very versatile so it could be slotted into any diet plan to help you meet your goals. If you need a day to day protein shake then you can’t go far wrong with 80% Whey – plus they have some good bundle offers with this product included. 8/10

The Protein Drinks Co UFit Pro50

 Ufit Pro50

Overview
Here’s what The Protein Drinks Co have to say:

Go large with Ufit Pro50, a protein drink like no other! Ufit Pro50 has been designed for those who require a little bit more from their protein shake with a whopping 50g of protein in each bottle.

What’s more, Ufit Pro50 is naturally rich in essential amino acids, the building blocks of your body. Essential amino acids cannot be produced by your body, meaning they must be obtained from foods and drink. Amino acids can also help prevent the breakdown of your hard earned and essential muscle tissue.

Ufit Pro50 has also been further enhanced with vitamins and minerals to keep your hard working immune system strong, ensuring you stay in peak shape and on top of your day whether you’ve got a big day at the office or a big session at the gym.

Ufit Pro50 has also been specifically designed to be low in fat and contains only natural, low GI carbohydrates and no added sugar. Unlike most other 50g protein shakes, we really focus on making sure you get more of the good stuff and less of the bad whilst still keeping our drinks incredibly tasty!
Ufit can either be used as one big 50g serving for those who require a bit more or alternatively you can use it over 2 or 3 servings due to the screw top bottle and you’ll still get over 15g per serving!

This shouts post workout to me. 50.2g of protein along with 17.2g of fast acting sugars to help with recovery. You get a good amount of Glutamine with Pro50 as well, if it had some Creatine in it could almost be classified as an all-in-one.

The fat content is a little higher than I like from my shakes but its manageable.

Taste
I’ve tried both the Strawberry and the Chocolate and whilst I preferred the Strawberry the Chocolate was very pleasant. These are much better straight out the fridge, they are fairly thick and resemble a milkshakes consistency. You’ll need to give it a shake in the bottle but it always was mixed to perfection. No sickly aftertaste either and it didn’t taste chemically at all.

Side Effects
None

Price
£22.50 for 6 bottles.

Results
Ready To Drink formulas always suffer a little bit nutritionally and usually work out more expensive than a powder but that’s the price for convenience. It really was awesome to come home from the gym and find the shake ice cold in the fridge ready to drink, especially after an arm workout no-one wants to be mixing up a shake.

They have really nailed the taste and consistency, it was much better than I was expecting. I’m not a fan of Chocolate shakes but this was exceptional. I could drink them everyday and not get tired of it.

I think this product is geared towards the weekend warriors in the gym or people who casually play sport looking for a recovery shake. Coming in at £3.75 per bottle you wouldn’t use this as your main shake or even your main post workout shake it would simply be too expensive. If you go to the gym once a week or play football on a Friday night then yes I can imagine you wouldn’t mind breaking the bank for a UFit Pro50 – still cheaper and infinitely healthier than a pint. UFit Pro50 is actually very good for recovery and does really help with DOMS – unless its leg day it which case nothing can help you – which is why it’s a shame its so expensive because a lot of people won’t get to try it. UFit Pro50 is very good and it would probably score around an 8 or higher if not for the price but I just can't justify £3.75 a serving. 5/10
