BareFoot Biltong Review

Overview

Here is what Barefoot Biltong have to say:

This is a traditional biltong developed using the spice and seasonings found on quality biltong throughout South Africa.
No matter how many packs we produce there will always be one constant in the biltong. It will always be made with the best ingredients and without any shortcuts in the curing or drying process. It will always taste great as a snack on its own, with a beer or wine, or mixing it up on a platter with the finest cheeses, dips or antipasti ingredients.

For those of you not familiar biltong is very similar to Beef Jerky (although the people at Barefoot might kill me for saying that!)

Nutritional Information

Since I reviewed 2 types of Biltong I’ll include both:

Chilli Biltong
Nutritional Information per 100g
Energy (KJ) 1100
Energy (Kcal) 261
Fat (g) 6.3
Carbohydrate (g) 5.3
Protein (g) 45.7

Original Biltong
Nutritional Information per 100g
Energy (KJ) 1159
Energy (Kcal) 274
Fat (g) 5.5
Carbohydrate (g) 5.4
Protein (g) 50.8

So we are talking about a very high protein snack, there isn’t quite enough to be a meal.  Its all good calories too, great for bulking or when trying to get protein in on any diet or cycle.

Taste
Both tasted pretty great, the flavours are stronger than the beef jerky that you’ll get in Tesco. Mine wasn’t fatty, it was chewy but not in a bad way, the biltong had a firm texture and the chilli flavour had a nice kick to it but wasn’t overpowering. You have to leave the biltong for 20 minutes to stand when you open the packet though so plan ahead, it’s incredibly frustrating when you open your snack and then realise that you have to wait to eat it.
They give you options as to how you like your biltong as well which is a nice touch, you can choose fatty or lean and wet or dry. Little touches like this make a big difference.

Price
£3.90 per 100g’s. Since you’ll have to pay post and packing as well it might be an idea to buy in bulk.

Results

Do you like Biltong? If you do then great you’ll like this. If you don’t like Biltong then this won’t convince you. It’s slightly more expensive than you’d pay in a supermarket but its much better quality. So you really do get what you pay for. It’s a high quality, high protein snack. It’d be great for getting extra protein into your diet, especially when on a bulk but it could be used all year round to help curve cravings for more unhealthy snacks. 7/10
